Challenge - Art

ART - What is art to you? What is your favorite type of art? Are you an artist? Just a few questions we can ask ourselves about art. We have probably all seen art that spoke to our hearts, or the kind where we think "A 5 year old could have done that", or something that probably touched our soul. And probably have had discussions with others about art. What is art to you? Think about that for a little while.

1: that describes what art means to you
-or-

Challenge - Beauty

Beauty - this is a word that has so many different meanings, depending on who you are. To some beauty can be a red rose blooming, but to others the beauty is not about the looks, but rather the fact that the rose is growing. Doesn't matter if it is red, white, or any other color. Just that it is here for us to enjoy.
When you hear the word Beauty, what comes to mind? Nature? Your child? Your mother? Or perhaps some actress or supermodel? Think it through. Perhaps write down the first words that came to mind when you saw the title of this post.

In this challenge I would like you to make a page

1: that describes what beauty means to you

-or-

My Inside-Self by Rachel Field

My Inside-Self and my Outside-Self
Are different as can be.
My Outside-self wears gingham smocks,
And very round is she,
With freckles sprinkled on her nose,
And smoothly parted hair,
And clumsy feet that cannot dance
In heavy shoes and square.

But, oh, my little Inside-Self
In gown of misty rose.
She dances lighter than a leaf
On blithe and twinkling toes.
Her hair is blowing gold, and if
You chanced her face to see,
You would not think she could belong
to staid and sober me!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please Look a Little Deeper

Please don't judge me by my face.
By my religion or my race.
Please don't laugh at what I wear.
Or how I look or do my hair.
Please look a little deeper--
Way down deep inside.
And although you may not see it.
I have a lot to hide.
Behind my clothes the secrets lie.
Behind my smile, I softly cry.
Please look a little deeper.
And maybe you will see,
The lonely little girl
That lives inside of me.
Please listen carefully to her--
She'll show that she's insecure.
Please try to be a friend to her
And show her that you care.
Please just get to know her
And maybe you will see
That if you just look deep enough.
You'll find the real me.

I hope you have fun doing this challenge.

Challenge - Sun

Sun - Monsoon has just started for us here in AZ. A little later than usual, and a lot more needed than usual. It has been so hot and dry here this year, and with the very low snow levels last winter, we really need the rain. Yeah, I don't live in the desert, so we do get snow in the winter LOL. Anyway, we love the sun, and we still get a lot of it in between the rain showers. You can do so many thing outside in the sun. Activities with the kids, hiking, camping, playing. Or just hang out, and maybe do some art journaling. Do you love the sun? Or maybe you don't? Or perhaps the sun means something entirely different than just summer and fun to you? Could be it symbolizes a time of happiness in your life? Does it represent the person you are now compared to a darker period growing up, your youth? I'm sure I don't know why;
Somehow the pleasant way he had
Of shining in the sky,
Just put a notion in my head
That wouldn't it be fun.
If, walking on the hill, I said
"I'm happy" to the sun.

Challenge - Unique

Unique - Be You! Be Yourself! I think we have all been told this a few times in our lives. But I think that even if we WANT to be unique there is always a little of someone else in us. Maybe we are a little like our parents, or grandparents. Or maybe we had a favorite teacher and wanted to grow up and be just like him/her. Or maybe we wanted to grow up and be NOTHING like anyone we knew. Who are YOU? Are you who YOU want to be? Do you want to change? Why? Are you as UNIQUE as you WANT to be?
In this challenge I would like you to make a page
1: about who you see when looking in a mirror

-or-

2: using a quote or poem as inspiration.

-or-

3: about how you think others see you. Are they right or wrong?

Feel free to read through the quotes, poetry, etc, below to use as your inspiration.

Unique - definitions:

2:

1: Everyone has a talent. What is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark place where it leads. (Erica Jong)
2: Figuring out who you are is the whole point of the human experience. (Anna Quindlen)
3: I cling to my imperfection, as the very essence of my being. (Anatole France)
4: It is never too late to be what you might have been. (George Eliot)
5: It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for something you are not. (Andre Gide)
6: Other people's opinion of you does not have to become your reality. (Les Brown)
7: Saying no can be the ultimate self-care. (Claudia Black)
8: We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are. (Anaïs Nin)
9: Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself to others. It is because we are different that each of us is special. Don't set your goals by what other people deem important, only know what is best for you. (Ken Lewis)
10: If both of us were the same, one of us would be unnecessary. (Unknown)
11: It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. (Herman Melville)
12: The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you except yourself. (Rita Mae Brown)

There are so many fantastic quotes on this subject. If you would like to explore others than those I have listed, try looking up "quotes unique" or "quotes conformity".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be Yourself by Bruce B. Wilmer
The world would like to change you;
There are pressures all around.
You must decide just who you are,
Then firmly hold your ground.
You have an image of yourself,
An ideal sense of you;
And to this vision you must always
Struggle to be true.
You know what you are good at,
And you know where talents lie;
But if you're ruled by others,
Your uniqueness could pass by.
Remember, there is much to learn;
But all new things aren't good.
Wisdom lies in what we learned,
And what we have withstood.
So, be yourself and don't allow
The world to take control.
Preserving your identity,
Is life's most precious goal.
Everybody Says by Dorothy Aldis
Everybody says
I look just like my mother.
Everybody says
I'm the image of Aunt Bee.
Everybody says
My nose is like my father's,
But I want to look like me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I found this little tidbit online. I dont know who wrote it, or who it is written about, but I liked it a lot.
A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?" Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you, but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up. He then asked, "Who still wants it?" Still the hands were up in the air.
"Well," he continued, "what if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants this $20?" Still the hands went into the air.
"My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.
"Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value: dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who love you."
The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE.
You are special. Don't ever forget it.
Challenge - Success
Success - I believe we all view success differently. Some say success is when you achieve greatness through a job, making it to the top. Become wealthy beyond ones own means. For others success can be the little things in life. The first steps after a terrifying accident, a child's first words, a cure for a decease.
Think about this word: Success. What does it mean to you?
In this challenge I would like you to make a page
1: where you journal about what the word means to you.
-or-
2: using a quote or poem as inspiration.
-or-
3: where you journal about the success you would like to achieve or maybe wish for others to achieve.
Feel free to read through the quotes, poetry, etc, below to use as your inspiration.
Success [link to Wikipedia]
Success - definitions:
1: obsolete : outcome, result
2:
    a : degree or measure of succeeding
    b : favorable or desired outcome; also : the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence
3: one that succeeds
Titles:
1: Bittersweet Success
2: Color of Success
3: I'm the Most Successful Failure
4: Nothing Succeeds Like Success
5: Overnight Success
6: Sudden Success
Quotes:
1: Success comes in cans. Failure comes in can'ts. (Unknown)
2: Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom. (General George S. Patton)
3: Success is measured not by what you gain, but what you overcome. (Unknown)
4: Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome. (Booker T. Washington)
5: There is only one success: to be able to spend your life in your own way, and not to give others absurd maddening claims upon it. (Christopher Darlington Morley)
6: Success is often the result of taking a misstep in the right direction. (Al Bernstein)
True Success by C. Hoppe
I hope my achievements in life shall be these:
That I will have fought for what was right and fair,
that I will have risked for that which mattered,
that I will have given help to those who were in need,
That I will have left the earth a better place for what I've done and who I've been.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Success by Ralph Waldo Emerson
To laugh often and love much,
to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children,
to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends,
to appreciate beauty,
to find the best in others,
to give of one's self,
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition,
to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation,
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived,
this is to have succeeded.
Challenge - Courage
Courage - We all need it and we all have it (at least to some degree). Some people think of courage when they see a fire figther going into a burning building or a soldier travel to a far away land, but courage can also be a single mom raising 5 children on a minimum wage, or a grandmother fighting a fierce decease. How do you define courage?
In this challenge I would like you to make a page journaling about
1: someone you know who you feel is courageous
-or-
2: what the word courage means to you
-or-
3: something you feel you need courage to live through.
Feel free to read through the quotes, poetry, etc, below to use as your inspiration.
Courage [link to Wikipedia]
Courage - definition:
mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.
Titles:
1: One Man with courage is a Majority.
2: Dawn begins at midnight.
3: Courage Under Fire.
4: Have Courage, Be Careful.
Quotes:
1: Sometimes you just have to take a leap and build your wings on the way down. (Kobi Yamada)
2: Pain nourishes courage. You can't be brave if you've only had wonderful things happen to you. (Mary Tyler Moore)
3: Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow. (Mary Anne Radmacher)
4: Courage is fear holding on a minute longer. (George S. Patton)
5: Creativity takes courage! (Henry Matisse)
6: Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. (Winston Churchill)
7: Courage is the power to let go of the familiar.
The Cautious Man
There was a very cautious man
Who never laughed or played.
He never risked, he never tried,
He never sang or prayed.
And when he one day passed away,
His insurance was denied.
For since he never really lived,
They claimed he never died.
SAMPLES:
These pages are all some I made a couple of years ago. All are digital art journal pages.
1. This one started out as a letter to myself. About what I wanted in life and how I was going to get there. I was supposed to share this letter, but because some of my wishes for the future involved other people I just could not share. I covered up the letter, did a little art work, and added my small title. I just NEED a little Courage. I still do.
In your art journal you can always cover up things by adding a new layer. you can choose to do this if you want to share your pages, or maybe you want to hide something from yourself. This is especially useful when you use your art journal as therapy. You can write down your most inner secrets. Cover it up. And only YOU will know it is there.
2. In this one I tried to use symbols to define the word Courage. Touching the lions nose would require a lot of courage, but in this one the lion symbolizes all those things I fear.
Using symbolism is great when you just can not find the words to describe how you feel, or what you want to express. Sometimes this can produce some extremely personal pages. People will tell you how great your page is, but ONLY YOU will know the true meaning of the page.
3. There is not much to say about this page. I loved the quote and wanted to use it. You can also tell on this one that it was in my earlier days doing art journaling. I hadnt quite made the jump from scrapbooking to art journals. I am not saying there is anything wrong with my choice of elements, but to make it look like an art journal I personally feel that the shadows should be a little less, and the blending a little more.
Challenge - Dance
We all dance at some point in our lives, be it at a ball, wedding, or possibly when we are all alone. Maybe you do not dance. Maybe you only dance in your thoughts, dreams, and heart. I love to dance when I am alone. All alone.
In this challenge I would like you to make a page
1: where you journal about when you like to dance. Do you love going to big balls so you can put on a flowing gown and waltz all night long, or do you love to hit the clubs and boogie (or whatever the young people call it these day) to some loud music, or maybe you only dance when no one can see you.
-or-
2: using a quote or poem as inspiration.
-or-
3: where you share why you don't dance.
Feel free to read through the quotes, poetry, etc, below to use as your inspiration.
intransitive verb
1: to engage in or perform a dance
2: to move or seem to move up and down or about in a quick or lively manner
The Dance by Garth Brooks
Lookin' back,
On the memory of
The dance we shared,
Beneath the stars above
For a moment,
All the world was right
How could I have known,
That you'd ever say goodbye?
And now,
I'm glad I didn't know
The way It all would end
The way It all would go
Our lives,
Are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain,
But I'da had to miss the dance.
Holding you,
I held everything
For a moment,
Wasn't I a king?
But If I'd only known,
How the king would fall
Hey who's to say,
You know I might have changed it all
And now,
I'm glad I didn't know
The way It all would end
The way It all would go
Our lives,
Are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain,
But I'da had to miss the dance
It's my life,
It's better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'da had to miss,
The dance
DigitalCorner: Paperworn Art Styles
I rarely find anything when it comes to digital art journaling that I suggest for others or see as "must haves", except when it comes to Tangie Baxter's Paperworn Art Style. These styles for PS and PSE are truly essential to doing fantastic art journal pages digitally.
I would never tell you that you had to spend money on anything you don't want. But I am 100% certain that this is an investment you would not regret. Some of you probably already have this style set.
If you look at the black and white texts at the bottom of this image you can see that it looks like the text is applied on top of the painted background. This is just not realistic looking. If you then apply the style, you can see that the text blends with the painted background similar to what it would do in real life.
The style set comes with 7 styles and 1 action. I use PSE6 so can only tell you how well the styles work with my software. The action only works in PhotoShop, not PhotoShop Elements. The 7 different styles work differently depending on your background and the color of the layer you want to apply the style to. It is really just a question of trying out each one. Some times it doesn't work at all if the background doesn't have the right texture or color, but most times you will get some very nice effects. And it is not just for text. You can use it for any kind of element you want to add to your art journal pages. Of course to make it look realistic it works best for painted elements and background.
These styles come both as commercial use and personal use. If you purchase the commercial use set you can sell your derivative works. For example if you ever decide to make cards, or maybe sell your pages. If you purchase the personal use set you may not sell derivative works. Honestly I suggest the commercial use version. With the commercial use version you are always safe to use it. Both for selling your works and should you ever want to publish your pages.
Challenge - Dream
This challenge can be done digitally or traditionally.
Dream...
Dreaming is a large part of our lives. There are the kinds that fill our minds while we sleep. Sometimes we remember them, sometimes we don't. Then there are the dreams we have about our future. The kind where we meet Prince Charming, win the lottery, travel the world, or possibly get that job we have wanted since we were 5 years old.
In this challenge I would like you to make a page about:
1: what you dreamt last night. The dream that you still remembered when you woke up this morning.
-or-
2: your daydream. The very thing that you dream about the most. Finding Mr. Perfect. What to do with a million dollars. Travel around the world. Your dream, your page.
Only as high as I reach can I grow
Only as far as I seek can I go
Only as deep as I look can I see
Only as much as I dream can I be.
What is a dream?
A dream is a magical thing
A rainbow of joy in your heart
Your own secret corner
Where no one can go
Where the path
To fulfillment can start
A dream lures you on,
Always one step ahead
Until you have caught it,
And then there's always another
To capture your soul
And lead you onward again.
A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes by Donna McElroy
A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep.
In dreams, you will lose your heartache
Whatever you wish for, you keep.
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smilin' through.
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you'll keep on believing
The dream that you wish for will come true.
I hope you have fun doing this challenge.
